Purpose of Position

Timken Research and Development (R&D) has responsibility for managing several key technical assets and capabilities for the enterprise. These include the company intellectual property portfolio (patents and technical publications), relationships with external industry and academic technical partners, administration of external funding streams, WHQ laboratory access policies, technical professional services, company archives, R&D/knowledge management, R&D workflow and portfolio management tools, technical platforms, and metrics, R&D business planning processes and capital expense plan management, and technology service and laboratory metrics.

This position serves as the primary leader for these critical R&D internal administrative and externally-facing functions. This position manages a team of analysts and specialists to own and execute these functions, while also personally providing expertise and skills toward these same ends. This position is often the first point of contact for external parties seeking to engage Timken R&D and therefore serves as a liaison between Timken and external technical partners. This position also serves to facilitate R&D results delivery to internal customers by coordinating business planning, platform/project management toolkits, metrics analysis, and results communication.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage the Intellectual Property (IP) management process at Timken by administering the IP Council. Coordinate and run quarterly cross-functional IP Council meetings, bringing together leaders from within Timken to make decisions about patent investments, working closely with external patent counsel and inventors to execute plans, coordinate IP training, and coordinate/facilitate IP related analysis, including patent/competitive landscapes, prior-art searches, technology awareness, etc.
  • Administer the technical publications process, managing paper/presentation submissions through a multi-stage review process and issuing approvals.
  • Administer the Timken technical archives and library as it currently constituted, plus develop a vision and action plan for expanding it into a more comprehensive and impactful technical knowledge management system.
  • Manage relationships with external technical partners, including industrial, academic, and government partners via contract negotiation and execution (research agreements, NDAs, JDAs, SoWs, and other contracts). Facilitate communication between external partners and internal R&D departments.
  • Manage WHQ laboratory secure access area policies, training, and approval processes.
  • Administer technical professional services expenses and contracts (consultants, subscriptions, consortia, engineering/professional societies, etc.).
  • Continuously improve and administer R&D workflow management tools and methods, for projects, technology service requests (TSRs), time-tracking, and capabilities & maintenance. Includes technical platform and road mapping toolkits and TSR web system administration.
  • Collect, analyze, and present R&D project, TSR, and laboratory service metrics to facilitate department performance management.
  • Work with R&D departments to manage capital expense budget planning, spending, and reporting.
  • Administer the annual R&D business planning process, working with internal customers and R&D departments to create a plan and manage expectations.

Technical/Functional Skills Required

  • Advanced organizational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated or potential strong management and talent development skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal networking and presentation skills for external facing responsibilities.
  • Extensive experience or expertise with common project/program management techniques.
  • A basic understanding of Timken engineering technology (product, materials, process) or similar. Must be able to speak or learn Timken technical jargon. Engineering background is required.
  • Basic incoming financial and patent/legal proficiency is a plus.
  • Knowledge Management and/or data analytics expertise is a plus.
  • Lean6Sigma/Design for Six Sigma is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor s degree in Engineering plus 8 or more years of engineering project/program management experience.
  • Master s degree in Engineering, Business or related is a plus.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
